چکیده

background sphenoid sinus is surrounded by many vital vascular and nervous structures. in more than 20% of patients with chronic sinusitis, involvement of sphenoid sinus has been observed. besides, sphenoid sinus is an appropriate route to access anterior and middle cranial fossa in surgery. therefore, it is important to have an adequate knowledge about the contents of sphenoid sinus and its proximity for nasal endoscopy, sinus surgeries and neurosurgeries. objectives the aim of this study was to study sphenoid sinus proximity with carotid artery and the optic nerve using computerized tomographic imaging. materials and methods in this prospective study, computerized tomographic images of sphenoid sinus of patients referred to imam khomeini and apadana hospitals were studied. the images were studied regarding any bulging, as well as not having a bone covering in sphenoid sinus regarding internal carotid artery and optic nerve. furthermore, unilateralness or bilateralness of their relationships was studied. results among 468 coronal and axial ct scan images of sphenoid sinus, 365 (78%) showed post-sellar pneumatization and 103 (22%) pre-sellar pneumatization. regarding existence of internal septa, 346 (74%) cases showed multiple septation, and the remaining images were reported to have a single septum. according to the reports of ct scan images, the existence of bulging as a result of internal carotid artery and uncovered artery were 4.22% and 5.8% in the right sinus, 4.9% and 5.4% in the left sinus, and 4.34% and 4.6% in both sinuses, respectively. according to the reports of ct scan images, existence of bulging as a result of optic nerve and uncovered nerve were 5.7% and 4.3% in the right sinus, 6% and 5.4% in the left sinus, and 12% and 3.2% in both sinuses, respectively. conclusions due to variability of sphenoid sinus pneumatization and the separator blade of the two sinus cavities, careful attention is required during sinus surgery to avoid damage to neural and vascular structures in its proximity.

Anatomical Variations of Vertebral Artery

Introduction: Vertebral arteries arise from the root of the neck as the first branches from the superior-posterior aspect of the subclavian arteries. They ascend the neck to enter the cranial cavity and supply blood to the brain. Methods: A total of 20 cadavers (in 10 years) were dissected for the study of variations in the origin of the vertebral artery. This study was conducte...

Anatomical variation of the extracranial course of the optic nerve in the floor of the sphenoid sinus.

OBJECTIVE We report a unique case of anatomical variation of the extracranial course of the optic nerve running in the floor of the sphenoid sinus. METHOD Clinical and radiological findings are presented. RESULTS A 39-year-old woman with Turner syndrome presented with severe headache associated with visual disturbances. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a mass presumed to be a sella menin...

ANATOMICAL VARIATIONS OF THE CHORDA TYMPANI NERVE

The author studied anatomical variations of the origin of the chorda tympani nerve from the mastoid portion of the facial nerve. The studies were performed on 200 specimens of human temporal bone. It was found that the chorda tympani may arise from the facial nerve in three levels: most commonly from the mid third of its mastoid segment (70%), less commonly from the proximal third (20%), an...

Variations in Lateral Sphenoid Sinus Wall Defects

Defects in the lateral wall of the sphenoid sinus are a rare cause of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) rhinorrhea. The etiology of these defects may be congenital or acquired. A dehiscent lateral craniopharyngeal canal, or Sternberg canal, arises from a malunion of two parts of the developing sphenoid bone: the greater wing and the basisphenoid.1,2 Originally reported in 4% of healthy adults,3 its tru...

An Analysis of Anatomic Variations of the Sphenoid Sinus and Its Relationship to the Internal Carotid Artery

Introduction  The sphenoid sinus (SS) has a high variability; its anatomical relations and variations must be well understood prior to the expanded endoscopic surgery (EES) at the skull base via the endonasal transsphenoidal approach. A feared complication is injury to the internal carotid artery (ICA). Objective  To evaluate the anatomic variations of the SS and its relationship to the ICA usi...

Sinonasal Anatomical Variations: A Multidetector Computed Tomographic Study

Background and Aim: The paranasal sinuses are known for their complex anatomy and significant difference in size and shape. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of anatomical variations of the paranasal sinuses in computed tomography (CT). Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional study, patients over 18 years of age, who had undergone CT imaging in a private clinic, were screened...
